Friend co-signs a lease to help her single mom pal, who turns the shared house into her family’s personal kingdom and refuses to discuss roommate rules or share space: ‘I told her we needed to talk about house rules, but she said she’s not interested’

  • I helped my friend get a house, but now she’s acting like it’s only hers. What would you do in my situation?

  • Background: We are late 20s. I recently moved to another state for my master's and reconnected with a friend I knew here.
  • She's a single mom, and her ex doesn't help at all, financially or with their kid.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • She works overnight caring for a baby, then spends all day with her own son, so she literally never gets a break and barely sleeps.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • When I first got here, she was so kind, she picked me up from the airport, showed me around, and even lent me her car before mine arrived.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • She was trying to move out and bring her mom and brother to help with the baby and support each other, but because she works under the table and has a poor credit score, she kept getting rejected for rentals.

  • It broke my heart seeing her so desperate, especially because I am a mom myself. Neither her ex nor his family would co-sign for her, so I offered that we rent a place together, and my husband could co-sign.

  • I'll only be there about five months a year since I travel back and forth, but the lease is for a year.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • My husband wasn't thrilled but trusted my judgment. Fast forward, we finally found a place and got approved, and that's where everything begins.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • What has happened so far: 1. The night before move-in, she texted me asking if I could show up an hour later because she and her family wanted to "pray in the house" first.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • I was honestly really hurt, like, why can't I be there too? We are both catholics and I'm also going to live there.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • Then the next day, she texted again, saying she was running late to pick up the keys and asked if I could come even later.

  • That's when I snapped and told her I thought it was rude to exclude me and ask me that.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • She replied with: "I really appreciate you helping us get this house, but it's always been for me and my family.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • We just wanted a private moment to pray together, and I don't know why you're overreacting." 2.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • I was taking a nap, and when I woke up, I saw that she had sent me a message asking if I could wait to leave the room because the baby's dad was there, and he didn't know I was living with them.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • She said she doesn't want him to know because he might want to negotiate a lower child support.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • Now, I asked her how we would deal with this every time he goes there, because I might have something to do where I have to shower, leave the house, etc., and she said: "I don't know, I don't know yet." 3.

  • My friend is coming to town to visit from Thursday-Sunday, but we'll sleep at another friend's house every day except Thursday.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • Thursday, I'll work overnight as a nanny, taking care of a newborn, and of course, my friend needs a place to sleep.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • So I texted my friend (roommate) explaining the situation, that I'd go to work at 9:30 p.m.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • and that my friend would sleep there, and I made the mistake (I guess?) of asking if she was okay with it.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • She replied that she wasn't ok with it, that no one else but her family and I have slept in the same space as her baby, and that she does not feel comfortable because she doesn't know my friend.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • I told her I've known my friend for 12 years and that I didn't think this was fair because I'm not her roommate; I'm also on the lease.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • She again told me I was creating a problem and that we need to have a "mutual interest" (??).
    via Separate_Presence880
  • 4. I told her we needed to talk about house rules, but she said she's not interested.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • I told her we need to talk about the rules because if I don't agree with something you are imposing, I don't want to keep living there.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • And she accused me of "if we don't agree with everything you say, then you'll put us on the street?" Well, I never mentioned that, I just said I would not live there.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • They are in three; I'm one. Unfortunately, that might mean they can't keep renting the place because they do not meet the requirements.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • It's a really hard. Any thoughts on the situation or how to best approach this? What would you do in my situation?
    via Separate_Presence880
  • She does not want to talk about house rules and said she's too tired organizing the house and working.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • My friend is getting here in two days, and I have to rent an Airbnb for her.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • I'm so, so disappointed, and I feel like I'm in the right here, but she's starting to get in my head and make me question myself, wondering if I'm overreacting.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • EDIT: To those telling me to move out: I can't! The lease states that even if I move out, I would still be financially responsible (meaning it will affect both my husband's and my credit scores if they don't pay).
    via Separate_Presence880
  • The only way to get out of the lease is by finding someone else to replace my husband and me (which she would never allow me to do, and I guess she would make a scene if I brought someone to show the house to), or everyone needs to sign agreeing to let us out, but then the landlord has to run their credit and income to see if they qualify, and they don't.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • So basically, I'm screwed. If anyone has any legal input on this, please let me know!
    via Separate_Presence880
  • Salty-Sprinkles-1562 I thought the ex didn't help at all, but now he's there all the time and paying child support? All you can do is see what the lease says about breaking it. You may have to pay a giant fee, or tough it out until the lease is over.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • OP Separate_Presence880 Well, that's what she told me in the beginning! Also, the child support is still being negotiated, he doesn't pay yet. He wanted to give her $300, but she wants more (fair). But honestly, I don't even know anymore if what she told me is true, because we've been there for four days, and he's already visited his kid twice.

  • CaptainFlynnsGriffin Since your friend seems confused about the situation I suggest that you push her to find a legal job with a W-2 and repair her credit so that she can take over the lease. If I were you I'd be concerned that an overnight nanny is a short term gig regardless. She needs to get something lined up. Or as others have said to communicate with the landlord about breaking the lease after five months - worth the temporary hit to the pocketbook. Your being roommates and sharing rent sh
    via Separate_Presence880
  • OP Separate Presence880 She is out of status in the country, meaning that she cannot have a formal job and does not want to go to court to formalize the child support because she is afraid of getting deported. I know, I am stupid.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • Destoran You and your husband cosigned and not her? Her name is not on the lease? Just give her 1 month notice and find a roommate for the rest of the lease.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • OP Separate_Presence880 Their name is on the lease, my name is on the lease... it sucks.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • bronwynbloomington Don't ask to talk about house rules. Simply announce, I'm renting halfsies on this house. I will be in it when I want. I will not hide from anyone. I will not stay away when your family comes to pray. I can invite my friend to stay. here. Then do it. What is she going to do? Complain (of course). Move out?
    via Separate_Presence880
  • DeeHarperLewis Don't get an Airbnb for your friend. Let them stay with you. Your roommate can suck rocks. You need some back bone. This girl played you.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • ineverreddit you are finding out the reasons why people didn't co-sign for her, sorry to hear that mang
    via Separate_Presence880
  • quaintist Get out of that lease, let the land lord know youre willing to stay until they find someone else and they dont charge u to break the lease but your room mate is insane. Shes not gonna change trust me. Give her an ultimatum if anything for the mean time shes just trying to guilt trip you
    via Separate_Presence880
  • I_Hate_History69 Her family couldn't co-sign for her, but they can pray over the house..she probably told them that u was moving in with her, not the other way around. I don't believe that bs about the baby daddy either child support is mandated, she should go to court if he tries to decrease it

  • emptykitten_AN "If we don't agree with everything you say, you'll throw us onto the street?" This is emotional blackmail. You are being manipulated. Every inch you give them will embolden them to control you even more. The response to this? "Your actions determine whether you end up on the street. All I want is equality and compromise. Basic fairness. Come to the table or find other arrangements." Don't let them flip it on you. Take a stand. Or they'll walk all over you.
    via Separate_Presence880
  • Traditional_Koala216 Ask to be taken off the lease. Also, don't rent houses for other people. I can understand why your husband wasn't thrilled to do it.
